Blue Route 66

Today’s photo comes from a blue hour at Cars Land!

Blue hour is pretty awesome at California Adventure. You have both Cars Land being lit as well as Paradise Pier. The blue starts on the left side of Cadillac Range and then eventually makes its way all the way over to the right. For this photo, I wanted to use the guard rail as a leading line across the frame and right into the ride path of Radiator Springs Racers. I had the leveling pretty bad on this shot, which resulted in losing part of the original composition I was going for. Another reminder to get it right in camera.

For the processing here, the lights on the range are very hot and the foreground is very dark, so I took a bracket of three exposures here and merged them into a 32-bit HDR tiff file using Lightroom. That way, I had a serious amount of control over the highlights and shadows. That made it easy to push them the way I wanted them to go without introducing a crazy amount of noise into the photo.

This photo was taken with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens, both of which are available at Amazon. If you shop at Amazon, click the links here in the article to help support the site! Thanks for looking!
