The Amazing Power of Camera RAW – Part 1

Hello readers! Today, I’m going to talk about how immensely powerful Adobe Camera RAW can be. In a world where many use Nik Filters, Topaz, Photomatix, and a myriad of other programs, great images can still be made without spending all that extra money and just using Camera Raw, whether you’re in Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or Lightroom. To demonstrate this, I’m going to edit an image of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, using nothing but Camera RAW. Here’s the original RAW file: Now, as a short disclaimer. This photo I’m using was pretty good before even doing any work in the RAW editor. It had good light, a decent exposure and good sharpness. Shooting with bad light or botching things in camera will more likely than not make a shot unworkable. We here at DPB like to think of the digital darkroom as a way of enhancing our photos, not as a crutch used to correct our mistakes. Moving on, the first thing I do when working in Camera RAW is adjust the White Balance. This shot had a pretty good balance of color temperature, so I actually left it on the “As Shot” selection. This usually is not the case. I usually tend to like my images a little warmer, so I tend to go higher on the WB. Next is Exposure. What Exposure does is simply to adjust your exposure. If you think your image is a little dark, or you want to bring out some shadow details, [...]

Main Street Holiday Mornings

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. During the holiday season, the trolley show still happens every morning, but with the performers (and the trolley) in holiday garb. It’s a really nice way to start the day off, and can lead to some great shots! This one was taken with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Thanks for lookin’, and have a great day!

Breaking Your Own Rules!

Hello readers! For today’s post, I’m going to talk a little bit about how sometimes it’s a good thing to break your own rules when it comes to processing. We’re going to start by taking a look at this RAW image from my trip to Disneyland this summer of the Mark Twain floating along the Rivers of America: There isn’t a whole lot I like about this shot. The lighting is kind of poor, the colors are drab, and the composition leaves something to be desired. So, I decided to give this one a shot and see if I could pull anything out of it. Into Camera Raw I went! As you can see, the above image is pretty overexposed due to the poor lighting. First thing I did was knock the exposure down and then increase the black levels to try to get a little pop out of the image. I got a little bit, but not exactly what I was looking for. So, I then pulled the Vibrance slider way over, all the way to 67. This brought out some of the blues in the sky that really weren’t in the RAW capture. But that wasn’t enough either. So, I went into the colors tab and bumped up the Blue only Saturation slider and then lowered the Blue only Luminance slider. The image was starting to come together, but it still seemed a little too run of the mill. So, I loaded it into Photoshop and decided to [...]

Take Your Time!

Hey guys! A big thanks for James Hilger for the last three posts on the blog all about Tokyo Disneyland. There is some really interesting stuff there, and I know that making it to Tokyo is a dream for many of us, and it was very cool of him to bring some of that home for us to see. For today’s post, I want to talk about something that I think we all need to do while taking photos at a Disney Theme Park. And that is simply, to relax and take your time. Being what I like to refer to as a seasoned veteran of vacationing at Disney, I know what it’s like to do what some of us call the “death march”. That would be waking up as early as possible, getting to the parks and spending all day riding as many rides and attractions as possible, darting from one to another at a break-neck pace. Now ask yourself, how is it going to be satiate my photographic needs while doing this? It is very difficult, and after a while, you start to become an expert of the “run-n-gun” style of photography. Shooting while walking, shooting while waiting in line, shooting while your loved ones go to the restroom (!), etc. Obviously, if this is the only way you can get your shooting in, it’s what you have to do. I understand that some people only go to Disney once every two years, and they really want to [...]
