Fun in the Sun for Everyone!

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Disney California Adventure. Paradise Pier is home to many attractions, such as Toy Story Midway Mania, California Screamin’, and Mickey’s Fun Wheel. It is also home to the nighttime spectacular World of Color. This is an area that has seen a lot of change over the years. I never saw the old version, but I really, really like the direction they went with for this change. The area really is a lot of fun, and during the one day I spent in DCA this summer, about half of it was spent in Paradise Pier. Thanks for looking’, and have a great day!!

Disney Photo Spots – EPCOT Monorail Strategy

This entry is part 15 of 16 in the series Disney Photography Spots

For today’s article, I’m going to share four of my favorite spots for photographing monorails in EPCOT Center. Taking photos of the monorail is one of my favorite things to do while in EPCOT. This strategy is really split into two parts based on what time of the day you are shooting. We’ll start with the morning. In my opinion, the best place to shoot the monorail in the morning is facing the Imagination pavilion. Bonus points if you can get in there during the Flower and Garden Festival like the above shot. Now, there are two spots I like to get this shot from. The first is the one you see above, which is right in between the mist machines in the straightaway between Future World and World Showcase. The second is a little closer to the pyramids. If you look at the above shot, you can see some people on the right of the frame. Right about where they’re standing is where you can get this shot: This one is a winner in my opinion because you get a little bit more clear view of the Imagination pyramids, and you get the awesome reflection in the creek that runs through this area of the park. Later on in the day, this area comes alive as long as you get a nice sunset. But the good lighting and blue skies are pretty consistent in the mornings here. Later on in the day, the good light hits the monorail in [...]

Town Square decorated for Halloween

Photographing these Mickey pumpkins can become addicting. I found myself stopping to photographing them each time I walked up and down Main Street. Depending on the lens you are using at the time, you can find some unique compositions for shooting these decorations. It is hard to see in this shot, but the pumpkins on the firehouse are carved to show firehouse items (dog, fire hydrant, etc). If you get a chance to see these decorations, take your time to really look at them because there are lots of little details to be found.

Tips for photographing a Haunted Mansion ghost

I had posted a photo on flickr a couple of weeks ago of Lady Renata, one of the ghosts who sits outside the Haunted Mansion during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. The photo itself was a shot I had wanted to take since last year when I first tried (and failed) at photographing her. Due to the extra lighting on the Haunted Mansion during these parties and the fact that it is dark around where she sits, it is difficult to get a good shot of her. I had received a comment on my flickr post asking if I would go over the steps I took to get the shot, which is what I will do now. To be completely honest, I did not have a real plan going into this. I knew that it would take a bit of trial and error in order to capture the scene the way I wanted. I decided my best setup would be to use my tripod and take multiple photos at different settings. That way I could always do some masking in Photoshop if I needed to combine some shots. I started off with a long exposure (15 seconds) at ISO 200. The idea being that I could capture the Haunted Mansion along with the fog and special lighting used during the party. I knew that Lady Renata would not be captured correctly though and would end up a blur because of her movement. I figured I could use a layer [...]
