Announcing a December WDW Photography Meetup

Cory and I are very excited to announce that we have put together our first meetup for Disney Photography Blog.  This December we will be at Walt Disney World from the 5th – 9th and hope many of you will be able to join us.  What started as a idea between some of us on flickr has quickly grown and we now want to invite any readers of the site to join us.

Different photographers from flickr and contributors here at Disney Photography Blog have decided to get together to spend a week photographing, visiting the resorts, learning from each other and having fun.  What better time to visit than Christmas time when the weather is good, crowds are low and there are many new photo opportunities thanks to the great decorations around the resort.

Who Can Join Us?

The answer is simple, anybody who wants too!  There is nothing to register for, no camera or knowledge requirements – you just have to be ready to enjoy yourself and to learn from each other.  Whether you use a point and shoot or a professional dslr, everybody is welcome.  Many of us have planned to stay at the POP Century (requesting 70′s section if you are interested) though others are staying at other resorts too.  Some of us are traveling solo while others have family coming along.  Our hope is to get as many people together throughout the week as we can.

Any Special Events?

Not this time, at least nothing we are scheduling ourselves.  We will be attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party on Thursday December 9th – though you would be required to purchase a ticket to this event yourself.  We have a preliminary schedule put together for the week (below) that you are welcome to join us on at any time.  If you are only available for one night that is fine or if you want to spend the week with us you can (though you may decide to go on your own after a few days of hanging around us :)

You are welcome to join us for more than this but we have decided to put aside certain times each day for possible group meetups:

Sunday December 5th – Hollywood Studios

We will be at Hollywood Studios from 7pm – 11pm for The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights and to do night photography around the park (plus a ride or two on the Tower of Terror). *This is an Extra Magic Hours night so it would be limited to guests staying on property.

Monday December 6th – Epcot

We are currently planning a group lunch at Via Napoli for that afternoon (limited seating remains so contact us if you want to join us for lunch).  We will then be waiting in the standby line for the 5pm Candlelight Processional – if you want to join us for that be prepared to start waiting at 4pm.  Ed Asner will be the guest narrator that night.

For those that do not wish to attend the Candlelight Processional, we will be gathering as a group after (around 6pm) to photograph around World Showcase.  We will be shooting Illuminations that night (starting at 9:30pm) which will include the great Peace on Earth tag at the end of the normal show.  After Illuminations we will spend time shooting World Showcase until security asks us to take our tripods and get out!

Tuesday December 7th – Animal Kingdom

We will be starting with an early breakfast at Boma (7:30am) – again seating is limited so contact us right away if you want to reserve a seat.  If the response is there we can book a second reservation.  After breakfast we can spend some time visiting the Animal Kingdom Lodge and photographing their Christmas decorations.  We will then be taking a bus over to Animal Kingdom to spend the day in the park.

Wednesday December 8th – Hollywood Studios

We will be arriving at the Studios that morning (gotta get a Toy Story FP) and spending the morning and early afternoon photographing the park.  Plan is to have lunch at a quick service as a group.  Planning on catching some of the Citizens of Hollywood shows throughout the day and of course a ride on the Tower of Terror.  Thinking of taking this time to visit the Epcot area resorts to view their Christmas decorations also.

Thursday December 9th – Epcot “Prime Day” / Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

Thursday looks like it will be a very fun and interesting day.  We will be spending the day at Epcot and are encouraging all dslr users to use just one prime lens during this day.  It can be very interesting and fun to stick to just a prime lens for a length of time and you will find yourself seeing shots very different.  If you do not have a prime lens or a dslr then don’t worry you will not be excluded – just a suggestion we are passing on to those that do.

That night we will be attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.  This is a hard ticket event and I would encourage you to purchase a ticket ahead of time if you think you will be going.  The event goes until midnight so we are planning on being at the Magic Kingdom until 1am to get some shots of Main Street after the crowds leave.

We hope you can join us at one point during the week (or the entire week!).  It should be a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

Let us know in the comments if you think you will be there.  I will be setting up a page soon to allow people to “sign up” for certain days so we know how many to expect. Also be sure to let us know about Via Napoli and Boma if you want to join us – those seats will not last long.

If you can’t join us then I hope you have at least enjoyed the early Christmas photos today!  Oh, and don’t worry as I am sure we will be planning another meetup for the spring/summer 2011 – this time with enough advance notice to put some special things together hopefully!

Dag nab it! I’m at WDW 11/30 – 12/5 (leaving before the event at Hollywood studios at 7:00 PM). Congrats to everyone who gets to go and I hope you can all enjoy the experience!

    • Adam Hansen   |   Sep 15, 2010

Sorry to hear that Keith. There is a slight chance I may be down a few days early so if you want to send me an email from the contact page maybe we can plan to meetup to shoot one night.

Hopefully next time we have enough advance notice to let everyone know well ahead of time to make plans – this was a last minute decision this time.

  2. Larry White   |   Sep 15, 2010

    I’ll be there!

  3. Cory Disbrow   |   Sep 15, 2010

Absolutely cannot wait for this! I hope a whole bunch of you guys can come out, meet us, maybe learn a bit, and just overall have a great time!!

  4. Ben   |   Sep 15, 2010

Wish I could make it, but you scheduled 6 days too early for me.

    • Adam Hansen   |   Sep 15, 2010

Thats too bad Ben. I am sure next time we will be able to schedule things much earlier so everyone will have a chance to plan accordingly. Enjoy your trip!

  5. Roger   |   Sep 15, 2010

Any chance we can book the same time next year too :) I’m not getting back there until December 2011. I can’t wait to hear about the meetup though and hope you guys have a great time!

    • Adam Hansen   |   Sep 15, 2010

I would say the chances are pretty good but nothing is definite yet :)

  6. Jessica   |   Sep 15, 2010

Sounds like fun! My boyfriend and I live about 20 minutes from the parks and would love to possibly join up in the evenings after work or Sunday.

Also not sure how I missed your stream on flickr all this time but I am enjoying it now – great photos.

      • Cory Disbrow   |   Sep 15, 2010

Ditto what Adam said, Jessica. Your photostream is excellent, can’t wait to meet you and your boyfriend during the events!

  10. Brenna   |   Sep 15, 2010

I wish I had the time and money to go because I love learning from everyone else. Hopefully I can soak up enough knowledge for my new D90 prior to my October 2010 trip. Ya’ll have fun and can’t wait to see pictures from your trip!

  11. Doug Saletnik   |   Sep 15, 2010

This is going to be fun! I’ll be driving from Jacksonville on 12/4 and getting there when the park opens at 9 AM. If there is anyone going to be anyone arriving on Saturday, let me know and we can get a head start on some good shots before the big guns arrive!

    • Doug Saletnik   |   Sep 15, 2010

OMG I need to proof read before I post. Please excuse my horrible grammar…long day!

  12. Dante Fratto   |   Sep 15, 2010

I will be in Disney during the photowalks BUT I don’t think the family will be happy. I am going to try for the Mickey Very Merry Christmas Party. I already have my tickets for that.

  13. Vanessa   |   Sep 15, 2010

I’m hoping to be able to make it out for the last day or two of the meet! I can’t wait to meet you all! :)

  14. Mark Roman   |   Sep 16, 2010

I’ll just miss out…leaving on the 5th arriving on the 28th. Hopefully I’ll get some pictures that I can be proud of this trip. I know I’ll be out late at Boardwalk and Epcot.

  15. Doug Norris   |   Sep 16, 2010

Figures you guys do this year. Last years trip during this time was a blast but I am totally jealous of all you for this years. :-P

  16. Cody Sims   |   Sep 17, 2010

I’m going to be there from the 1st through the 9th with my family, but being our first trip to WDW with kids, it’s going to be a completely different kind of trip than we’re used to. We haven’t finished our itinerary but I’m definitely going to try to spend some time with the group, including one of the late nights!

  17. Isabelle   |   Sep 19, 2010

Cool ! Can’t wait to see if I can join a day or two… I have to wait for my boss ot get my days off approved…

  18. Ryan Pastorino   |   Sep 19, 2010

Like I mentioned in the flickr discussion page, I will be there the 7-10th. Great to see a schedule of events. Looks like I will be able to attend a few of them. I’m looking forward to it, can’t wait!

  19. Alan   |   Sep 21, 2010

Hoping I can swing this. If I can’t make it for the full 5 days, perhaps I can just meet up for a day or two.

  20. Carolyn   |   Sep 24, 2010

Please, please PRETTY PLEASE let’s get together in mid February! :) Say, the week of February 12-19? *hint hint*

I’m changing my ticket to join!! (Original trip Nov. 30 – Dec. 5) I’m new to SLR but I have been so amazed with the WDW photos I have seen that as a Disney fan you have inspired me to capture more myself. Thank you all for sharing!

  23. Jenn (DisneyGirlinNJ)   |   Oct 13, 2010

Now THIS sounds like a perfect vacation/meet-up!! Unfortunately I already have a trip planned for the marathon and don’t think two trips in less than a month are in my budget. :(

  24. Colin (Sonny Eclipse)   |   Nov 4, 2010

I arrive in town on the 8th so can hopefully hook up with everyone on the 9th. My daughter will be with me so it will depend on if I can talk her into it. I’m anxious to get some help from some experts as I’m fairly green.

  25. Mariah   |   Dec 2, 2011

I would really like to join some of the meet ups. I am local, and love going to the parks. Are you going to be posting specific meeting places for each event?
