Flo’s V8 Cafe

Today’s photo comes from Radiator Springs, otherwise known as Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.

This photo has a fun story to it. I was in the park shooting with Mike Greening and Gregg Cooper, friends who have both contributed their talents to the site here before. We wanted to close down Cars Land and shoot it as long as possible, but as it turned out that night, a large company had rented out the area for a private party. Disney set up catering spots as well as tables for folks to sit at during the event, making the photography a little bit tricky that night. Regardless, we made it work and had a great time doing so.

It seems that the shot everyone (myself included) has done is this beautiful restaurant (which has GREAT food, by the way) is to go ultra wide straight down the middle. I thought this would make for a little bit more unique of a photo, if for no reason other than the fact that it isn’t the one that everyone has taken and posted online somewhere. With this scene, the neon is so bright that getting an exposure for the sky is rather difficult, and kind of ends up looking fake, so I just ended up going with the all black sky.

This shot was taken with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens, both of which are available at Amazon. If you do any shopping at all at Amazon, please click the links in this article, as anything you buy will then help support the site. Thanks for reading!!

Great shot with a unique angle, Cory! How do you post process these shots with neon? Cars Land is full of it and it’s a bit challenging for me in Lightroom? Any way to show a video tutorial on the site or point us in the right direction? Thx!

David, which version of Lightroom are you using? I use Lightroom 4, and the Highlights slider takes care of blowing out the highlights on the neon really well. I may also make a video this weekend on the subject, nice suggestion!

Thx for the reply Cory. I’m using LR 4 (trying the LR 5 beta too). Perfect, i’ll try that slider and would love to see a quick video on the subject.
